Blue Circus
Tryptic, each 48 x 60 in. Plaster, sponge, metal, plastic, hot glue sticks, steel wool, rope, and make up on canvas. 2016.

Blue is a powerful and complicated color. It is the color of the ocean. Living in Venice, I see the ocean every day. The ocean is a source of inspiration for me, and has been ever since I first touched my big toe onto wet sand. From a distance, the ocean is a breathtaking. Up close, however, it is obvious the ocean is filled with trash and pollution. This duality is a persistent theme in my work: the illusion of beauty at a distance that is shattered upon closer inspection. Further, this work is comprised of ordinary object, made to look entirely different in combination with one another. The severed doll parts and plaster and sponge sculptures also severs the initially placid appearance of the piece.
